Introducing Matter: An Open Communication Standard Enhancing Compatibility of Smart Devices

Introducing Matter, the open-source communication standard that enhances interoperability between smart ecosystems and devices. It is a joint initiative by tech giants like Amazon, Apple, Google, and the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA).

Over 270 companies are part of the Matter Alliance, aiming to improve compatibility in the smart world. Available Matter-compatible products include dimmable 24V constant-voltage drivers (35W, 60W, 100W, and 150W versions), wireless Matter to DALI modules (active and passive), and wireless Matter to DALI SR with strain relief and integrated DALI power supply.

These modules can be connected directly to existing DALI LED drivers, eliminating the need for retrofitting. In a Matter use scenario, a smartphone with the preferred ecosystem’s app (e.g., Apple Home app) acts as a remote control and commissioning tool. Adding a Matter-ready device is as simple as scanning the QR code on the device with the smartphone’s camera.

A smart home device like Apple Home Pod mini or Samsung Wireless Charger serves as the hub for Matter communication, relaying commands to the wireless mesh network and the lighting strip system. Matter can communicate via WiFi and Thread, with Tridonic using Thread as the basis for its wireless mesh network. Thread offers low power consumption, stable data transmission with AES encryption, and low latency.

Controlling LED lighting becomes effortless with a simple voice command like “Hey Siri, dim the lights in the office to 20 percent.”
